Fungus Gnat

Natural Habitat

Moist soils rich in organic matter, greenhouse environments, and indoor potted plants.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae feed on fungi, algae, and organic mulch in soil; occasionally they feed on plant roots. Adults do not feed or primarily consume liquids.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are weak fliers often seen running across soil surfaces or flying near light sources. They have a short lifespan of about one week and go through complete metamorphosis from egg to adult in 3-4 weeks.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans but can be a nuisance. Larvae can damage houseplant roots if populations are high. They help in the ecosystem by decomposing organic matter.
