Natural Habitat

Diet & Feeding
Scavengers that feed on animal-based materials including wool, silk, feathers, fur, hair, and dried pet food.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae are avoidant of light (photophobic) and tend to hide in dark, secluded areas. They undergo several molts during a development period that can last from months to years depending on food and temperature.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Significant pest that can damage carpets, clothing, and upholstery. Larvae hairs can cause localized skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Benefits: None to humans; in nature, they act as decomposers by recycling keratin.
