Natural Habitat
Human dwellings, specifically in bed frames, mattresses, cracks, and crevices near sleeping areas.
Diet & Feeding
Obligate hematophagous; primarily feeds on human blood, but will feed on other warm-blooded animals if humans are unavailable.
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal parasites that hide during the day and emerge at night to feed. They detect hosts via body heat and carbon dioxide and can survive several months without a blood meal.
Risks & Benefits
No known disease transmission, but bites cause itching, allergic reactions, and significant psychological distress. They are considered a major urban pest and difficult to eradicate.
