Natural Habitat

Damp environments, particularly in houseplant soil with high organic matter, greenhouses, and moist woodland areas.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae feed on fungi, algae, and decaying plant matter in the soil; occasionally feed on plant roots. Adults do not eat but may sip liquids.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are weak fliers often seen running or flying near the surface of the soil. They are attracted to light and carbon dioxide. They have a short lifespan of about one week as adults.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans as they do not bite or sting. In large numbers, larvae can damage houseplants or crops by feeding on root hairs. They are beneficial as decomposers in natural ecosystems.
