Natural Habitat

Diet & Feeding

Scavengers that feed on natural fibers and animal products including wool, silk, feathers, fur, hair, dead insects, and dried food products.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae prefer dark, undisturbed areas. They undergo a complete metamorphosis from egg to larva, pupa, and adult beetle. They are known for leaving behind 'moulted' skins as they grow.

Risks & Benefits

They are a significant domestic pest that can damage clothing, rugs, and blankets. While they do not bite humans, their bristly hairs can cause 'carpet beetle dermatitis,' an allergic skin reaction or respiratory irritation in sensitive individuals.
