Near clean, moving bodies of fresh water such as rivers and streams

Diet & Feeding

Adults eat very little or nothing, though they may take nectar. Larvae (hellgrammites) are generalist predators of aquatic insects.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal and strongly attracted to lights. Adults live for only a few days to reproduce. Females lay egg masses on rocks or vegetation overhanging water.

Risks & Benefits

Possess powerful jaws and can deliver a painful bite if handled, though they are not venomous. They are excellent ecological indicators of water quality.
