Natural Habitat

Worldwide in human structures, particularly pantries, kitchens, food warehouses, and grocery stores where dried food is stored.

Diet & Feeding

Stored dried foods including grains, cereal, flour, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, chocolate, and pet food.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae spin silken webs over food sources as they feed. When ready to pupate, they often crawl away from the food source to walls or ceiling corners to form a cocoon (pupa), which is the life stage most likely seen in the image provided.

Risks & Benefits

Major household pest that causes significant economic loss through food contamination. They pose no direct health risk or bite/sting hazard to humans, but infested food must be discarded due to larval silk, frass (waste), and shed skins.
