Deciduous forests, woodlands, parks, and nearby residential areas, often near decaying logs or trees

Larvae feed on decaying wood of rotting deciduous trees (like oak, maple, and beech); adults feed on tree sap, rotten fruit, and honeydew

Adults are nocturnal and strongly attracted to outdoor lights during summer months. Males use enlarged mandibles to fight other males for mating rights and territory. When flipped on their back, they struggle to turn over.

Harmless to humans, though adults can give a mild, non-venomous pinch with their mandibles if handled roughly. Highly beneficial as decomposers, helping break down dead wood and return nutrients to forest soil.
