Mold Mite

Natural Habitat

High humidity environments rich in fungi; commonly found on decomposing organic matter, stored food products (grain, cheese, meats), and occasionally on damp fabrics or furniture.

Diet & Feeding

Primarily feeds on mold and fungi growing on various surfaces, but also consumes stored food products rich in fat and protein like cheese, cured meats, grain, and seeds.

Behavior Patterns

They reproduce rapidly in warm, humid conditions. Large populations appear as a moving 'dust'. They do not fly or jump but crawl slowly across surfaces where food sources (mold) are present.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Can contaminate stored food, rendering it inedible. Major allergen source causing respiratory issues or skin irritation (Grocer's Itch). Benefits: None significant to humans, though they play a role in decomposition in natural environments.
