Diet & Feeding

Herbivorous; feeds on a wide variety of plants including fruit trees, vegetables, and ornamental plants by piercing the plant tissue to suck out juices.

Behavior Patterns

Known for their 'stinking' defense mechanism which involves releasing a pungent odor from glands when threatened or crushed; they undergo simple metamorphosis from egg to nymph to adult.

Risks & Benefits

Considered a major agricultural pest that can damage crops; for humans, they are a nuisance pest in homes but do not bite or sting. They provide little ecological benefit in non-native regions.
