Natural Habitat

Found exclusively on humans, primarily in the pubic hair or other coarse hair such as eyelashes, eyebrows, beards, and armpits.

Diet & Feeding

Obligate ectoparasite; feeds exclusively on human blood many times a day.

Behavior Patterns

They are sedentary and move very little once they grasp a hair shaft; they spread through close physical contact, particularly sexual contact, and lay eggs (nits) at the base of hairs.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Causes intense itching (pruritus) due to an allergic reaction to their saliva and can lead to secondary skin infections from scratching. They are an indicator of close physical contact with an infested individual. Benefits: None.
