Natural Habitat

Damp areas with organic matter, such as drains, sewers, septic tanks, and wet soil.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae eat decaying organic matter, bacteria, and fungi (biofilm) in drains; adults primarily feed on nectar or contaminated water.

Behavior Patterns

Weak fliers that are often found resting on walls near drains. They are most active at night and have a short life cycle of 1 to 3 weeks.

Risks & Benefits

While they do not bite and are not known to transmit diseases, they can be a nuisance and may potentially carry bacteria from sewage into clean areas. They help break down organic sludge in pipes.
