Natural Habitat

Human scalp and hair, most commonly found behind the ears and near the neckline at the back of the head.

Diet & Feeding

Obligate ectoparasites that feed exclusively on human blood several times a day.

Behavior Patterns

They are wingless and cannot jump or fly; they move by crawling. They attach their eggs (nits) to the base of hair shafts with a waterproof glue-like substance.

Risks & Benefits

While they do not transmit bacterial or viral diseases, they cause intense itching (pruritus) and scalp irritation. Secondary skin infections can occur from scratching. They provide no ecosystem benefits.
