Inchworm (Spanworm / Measuring worm)
Scientific Name: Geometridae (larvae)
Order & Family: Lepidoptera: Geometridae
Size: Typically 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) depending on species and developmental stage.

Natural Habitat
Widely distributed globally; commonly found on leafy vegetation, deciduous trees, and in gardens.
Diet & Feeding
Herbivorous; they primarily consume the leaves of various plants, shrubs, and trees.
Behavior Patterns
Characterized by a unique 'looping' locomotion due to lacking middle prolegs. They frequently use camouflage to mimic twigs (as seen in the image) and spin silken threads to drop from branches when threatened.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans. While some species can be significant agricultural or forestry pests by defoliating trees, they serve as a critical food source for birds and play a role in their ecosystems as pollinators once they mature into moths.
