Pisaura mirabilis
- Order & Family
- Araneae: Pisauridae
- Size
- Body length typically 10-15 mm (females) or 10-13 mm (males).
Natural Habitat
Tall grass, woodlands, gardens, and low-growing vegetation throughout Europe and parts of Asia.
Diet & Feeding
Carnivorous predator feeding on a variety of small insects including flies, beetles, and midges.
Behavior Patterns
Diurnal hunters that do not spin a web to catch prey. Famous for mating rituals where the male offers the female a silk-wrapped gift (an insect). The female carries the large egg sac in her chelicerae until it is ready to hatch, at which point she builds a silk 'nursery tent' for the spiderlings.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans; they are reluctant to bite and their venom is not medically significant. They benefit the ecosystem by controlling garden and agricultural pest populations.
