Natural Habitat
Typically found near boxelder trees, but also maple and ash tree varieties; often congregate on south-facing sunny walls of buildings during autumn.
Diet & Feeding
Mainly sap from the leaves, flowers, and seeds of boxelder trees, but may also feed on other maple and ash trees.
Behavior Patterns
They are social insects often seen in large aggregations. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis (egg, nymph, adult). In winter, they seek shelter in wall voids or attics.
Risks & Benefits
They are primarily a nuisance pest and do not bite or sting. They can cause minor spotting on fabrics with their excrement and may emit a foul odor if crushed.
