Varied Carpet Beetle

Typically found indoors in buildings, especially in dark, undisturbed areas like closets, under furniture, and near floorboards.

Adults feed on pollen and nectar; larvae feed on animal products including wool, silk, feathers, fur, and dead insects.

Adults are attracted to light and often found near windows; larvae are avoidant of light and can remain in the larval stage for months to years depending on food availability.

Non-venomous and does not bite; a major household pest that can damage carpets, clothing, and blankets. Larval hairs can cause allergic skin reactions (dermatitis) in sensitive individuals.
