Natural Habitat

Found in tropical and subtropical regions, specifically in dry, sandy soils and dusty environments.

Diet & Feeding

The insect feeds on the blood of its host. The female burrows into the host's skin (often the feet) to feed and produce eggs.

Behavior Patterns

The female burrows into the epidermis, leaving a small opening for breathing and egg expulsion. After several weeks, the female dies and is sloughed off with the skin.

Risks & Benefits

Causes tungiasis, characterized by inflammation, severe pain, and itching. It can lead to secondary bacterial infections like tetanus or gangrene if left untreated.
