Household Casebearer moth
Phereoeca uterella
- Order & Family
- Lepidoptera, Tineidae
- Size
- 8 mm to 13 mm in length for the larval case.
Natural Habitat
Found inside homes, particularly in damp areas, on walls, and under furniture where dust and spider webs accumulate.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on spider webs, wool, silk, hair, and other organic debris found in household dust.
Behavior Patterns
The larva constructs a protective silken case covered in sand, dust, and debris. It can poke its head out of either end to move or feed and stays inside the case until it pupates and emerges as a small moth.
Risks & Benefits
They are considered minor household pests because they may damage silk or woolen fabrics. However, they are non-toxic to humans and pets and help clean up spider webs and organic detritus.
