Case-bearing Clothes Moth (Larva)

Natural Habitat

Typically found indoors in dark, quiet areas like closets, attics, and under furniture. They live on fibrous materials such as wool carpets, clothing, tapestries, and furs.

Diet & Feeding

The larvae feed on keratin-rich animal fibers, including wool, fur, silk, feathers, felt, and sometimes dried animal remains. They do not eat synthetic fabrics or cotton unless those are soiled with food or sweat.

Behavior Patterns

The most distinctive behavior is that the larva constructs a portable, cigar-shaped silken case around itself, often incorporating debris and fibers from the material it is eating. It carries this case with it as it moves and feeds, eventually pupating inside it. They avoid light.

Risks & Benefits

Risk: They are a significant household pest that causes damage to expensive fabrics, rugs, and clothing by eating holes in them. Benefit: In nature, they help break down animal matter like bird nests or owl pellets, serving as decomposers.
