Tapeworm Segment (Proglottid)

Intestines of host animals (dogs, cats, wildlife); dried segments are often found on pet bedding, furniture, carpet, or around a pet's rear end.

Parasitic; absorbs digested nutrients directly from the host animal's intestine.

Moist segments crawl out of the host's anus or pass in feces. As they dry, they contract and harden into seed-like structures, releasing eggs into the environment.

Risks: Indicates a tapeworm infection in domestic pets or livestock, which can cause weight loss, anal irritation, or nutritional deficiency. Humans (especially children) can occasionally ingest infected fleas resulting in accidental infection. Benefits: None.
