Diet & Feeding

Herbivorous; feeds on a wide range of fruits, vegetables, and field crops including apples, peaches, tomatoes, and corn.

Behavior Patterns

Known for entering homes in large numbers to overwinter. When threatened or crushed, they release a pungent odor from scent glands. They undergo hemimetabolous metamorphosis (egg, nymph, adult).

Risks & Benefits

Significant agricultural pest causing damage to crops. Non-toxic to humans but can be a major nuisance; they do not bite or sting but may cause skin irritation in some individuals.
