Natural Habitat

Moist environments with decaying organic matter, such as bathroom drains, sewers, septic tanks, and compost piles.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae feed on the gelatinous film (biofilm) of algae, bacteria, and fungi found in drains; adults feed on nectar and polluted water.

Behavior Patterns

Weak fliers that often crawl on surfaces. They are nocturnal and active near their breeding sites. The life cycle from egg to adult takes about 7 to 28 days.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless as they do not bite or transmit diseases to humans, but can be a nuisance in large numbers and may indicate plumbing issues or poor sanitation.
