Human Eyelash Mite

Scientific Name: Demodex folliculorum

Order & Family: Order: Trombidiformes; Family: Demodicidae

Size: Approximately 0.3 mm to 0.4 mm in length (microscopic)

Human Eyelash Mite

Natural Habitat

Found on the human face, specifically in or near hair follicles and sebaceous glands of the eyelashes, nose, and cheeks.

Diet & Feeding

They feed on sebum (skin oils), dead skin cells, and hormones found in the hair follicles and oil glands.

Behavior Patterns

They are nocturnal, emerging from follicles at night to move about the skin and find mates. They lay eggs inside the follicle and have a life cycle of about 14–18 days.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless commensals and part of the skin's biome; however, overpopulation (Demodicosis) can lead to skin irritation, blepharitis (eyelash inflammation), or rosacea. They may help in removing dead skin cells.
