Barnacle Scale (or Wax Scale)

Scientific Name: Ceroplastes cirripediformis

Order & Family: Hemiptera: Coccidae

Size: 3 to 5 mm in diameter

Barnacle Scale (or Wax Scale)

Natural Habitat

Leaves and stems of various woody ornamental plants and fruit trees in tropical and subtropical regions.

Diet & Feeding

Plant sap. They use piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on the phloem of host plants.

Behavior Patterns

Nymphs (crawlers) are mobile but settle quickly; adult females are sessile (immobile) and secrete a thick, waxy, barnacle-like protective covering. They reproduce via eggs kept under the female's body.

Risks & Benefits

Risks include plant stress, leaf drop, and dieback from sap loss. They secrete honeydew, which encourages the growth of black sooty mold and attracts ants. They have no direct benefits but are a food source for some predatory ladybugs and parasitic wasps.
