Natural Habitat

High humidity environments with abundant organic matter, such as kitchens, bathrooms, damp basements, or stored food containers.

Diet & Feeding

Primarily feeds on mold, fungi, and products high in protein and fat like grains, cheese, dried meats, and seeds.

Behavior Patterns

They reproduce rapidly in humid conditions (above 65% RH). They do not fly but can be dispersed by air currents or by hitching rides on larger insects.

Risks & Benefits

They do not bite or sting but can cause 'grocer's itch' or allergic reactions/asthma via inhalation or contact. They can contaminate stored food products but serve an ecological role in breaking down organic matter.
