Cicada exuvia (Cicada nymph shell)

Found on tree trunks, soil, wooden structures, and fabrics outdoors or near open windows after nymphs emerge from underground to molt.

Nymphs feed on plant root xylem sap underground; the shed exoskeleton (exuvia) does not eat.

Cicada nymphs live underground for years before crawling out, climbing a vertical surface, and shedding their exoskeleton to emerge as winged adults.

Completely harmless to humans, pets, and property. The shed skin is harmless, and adult cicadas serve as an important food source for birds and wildlife while aerating soil during emergence.
