Natural Habitat

Typically found indoors in closets, carpets, and storage areas, especially where natural fibers like wool, silk, or fur are present. They thrive in dark, undisturbed locations.

Diet & Feeding

The larvae feed on keratin-rich animal fibers such as wool, cashmere, fur, silk, feathers, felt, and leather. They may also eat cotton or linen if it is soiled with food or body oils.

Behavior Patterns

The larva spins a silken case around itself, which it carries like a shell. It camouflages this case with fibers and debris from the material it is currently eating. When disturbed or ready to pupate, it retreats inside the case.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Major household pest that can cause significant damage to clothing, carpets, tapestries, and taxidermy. They create erratic holes in fabrics. Benefits: In nature, they help break down animal matter (like dropped feathers or old nests), acting as decomposers.
