Natural Habitat
Gardens, waste ground, and riverbanks where species of Mullein (Verbascum) or Buddleia are present.
Diet & Feeding
Herbivorous; feeds on the leaves and flowers of Mullein, Buddleia, and Figwort.
Behavior Patterns
The larvae are active from May to July. They are known for being conspicuous and having warning coloration (aposematism) to deter predators. They pupate in a strong cocoon underground, where they may remain for up to 5 years before emerging as adults.
Risks & Benefits
Generally considered a garden pest as they can quickly defoliate their host plants. While not harmful to humans, they can significantly damage ornamental Mullein plants.
