Natural Habitat

Found in wooded areas, cotton fields, and tall grasses. Frequently enters homes or garages in late summer and autumn.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivorous; hunts insects such as crickets, grasshoppers, and other spiders using speed and wait-and-watch tactics.

Behavior Patterns

Active hunters that do not spin webs to catch prey. Females carry their egg sacs attached to their spinnerets and later carry spiderlings on their backs.

Risks & Benefits

Benefits the ecosystem by controlling pest populations. Despite the name, they do not carry rabies; their bite is rare and generally comparable to a bee sting, not move medically significant to humans.
