Natural Habitat
Intestines of carnival mammals (primarily dogs and cats); found as proglottids in fecal matter, pet bedding, or on animal fur.
Diet & Feeding
Absorbs nutrients through its skin from the host's intestinal tract.
Behavior Patterns
Moist, fresh proglottids are mobile and crawl out of the host's anus; they eventually dry out, resembling yellow-gold seeds, and release eggs.
Risks & Benefits
Parasitic risk to pets and occasionally humans (especially children) if an infected flea is accidentally ingested; causes mild gastrointestinal issues but is easily treatable with anthelmintic medication.
