Red-femored Stag Beetle

Deciduous forests, woodlands, parks, and nearby residential areas, often found around decaying hardwood trees.

Larvae feed on rotting wood (especially oak, beech, and maple), while adults feed on tree sap, rotten fruit, and honeydew.

Adults are active in late spring and summer, primarily at night, and are attracted to artificial lights. Males use their enlarged mandibles to wrestle rivals for mates.

Harmless to humans, though adults can give a mild pinch if handled roughly. Highly beneficial decomposers that help recycle nutrients into forest soils.
