Natural Habitat
Found indoors in homes, museums, and warehouses, particularly in dark, secluded areas like under furniture, along baseboards, and in closets. Also found outdoors on flowers.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on natural fibers including wool, fur, silk, feathers, dead insects, and dried plant products. Adults feed on pollen and nectar.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are active flyers and are attracted to light, often seen near windows. The larvae are pests and prefer darkness, causing damage by chewing irregular holes in fabrics. They have a complete metamorphosis life cycle.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Larvae can cause significant damage to carpets, clothing, upholstery, and museum specimens. They can also cause allergic reactions (dermatitis) in some people due to the larvae's tiny hairs. Benefits: In nature, they act as decomposers of dead animal matter.
