Scale Insect
Scientific Name: Variable (Coccidae, Diaspididae, or Monophlebidae families)
Order & Family: Order Hemiptera; Superfamily Coccoidea
Size: 1 to 5 mm (0.04 to 0.20 inches)

Natural Habitat
Typically found on the stems, branches, and leaves of many host plants including houseplants, shrubs, and ornamental trees.
Diet & Feeding
Scale insects are plant parasites that feed on the sap (phloem) of plants using needle-like mouthparts.
Behavior Patterns
Once they reach adulthood, females often become immobile and secrete a waxy, shell-like covering as protection. They remain in one spot for the duration of their life cycle, while males may have wings and are short-lived.
Risks & Benefits
They are considered significant agricultural and horticultural pests. Heavy infestations can weaken plants, cause yellowing leaves, and lead to plant death. They secrete 'honeydew' which can attract ants and promote the growth of sooty mold.
