Cochineal Scale

Natural Habitat

Arid and semi-arid regions of the Americas, specifically living on various species of prickly pear cacti (Opuntia).

Diet & Feeding

The insect survives by sucking the moisture and nutrients from the host prickly pear cactus.

Behavior Patterns

The insects congregate in large colonies on cactus pads. The females are sessile (they do not move) once they begin feeding and produce a white, waxy powder to protect themselves. The red color seen in the image comes from the high concentration of carminic acid inside their bodies.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: It is a minor pest to cacti. Benefits: They are highly valued as the primary source of 'carmine' or 'cochineal' dye, a natural red pigment used in food, cosmetics, and textiles.
