Natural Habitat
Human dwellings, specifically beds, mattresses, bed frames, and other furniture near sleeping areas; they hide in cracks and crevices during the day.
Diet & Feeding
Obligate hematophagous (blood-feeding); they primarily feed on human blood but can also feed on other warm-blooded animals.
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal and elusive; they are attracted to the carbon dioxide and warmth emitted by sleeping hosts. They have five nymphal stages, each requiring a blood meal to molt.
Risks & Benefits
Risks include itchy, red welts from bites, allergic reactions, and significant psychological distress/insomnia. They are not known to transmit diseases to humans. There are no ecological benefits to humans; they are considered a major household pest.
