Varied Carpet Beetle
Scientific Name: Anthrenus verbasci
Order & Family: Coleoptera: Dermestidae
Size: 2mm to 4mm (adults); larvae can reach up to 5mm.

Natural Habitat
Indoors, they are commonly found in carpets, upholstery, closets, and air ducts. Outdoors, they inhabit bird nests, bee nests, and flowering plants.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on natural animal fibers like wool, silk, feathers, fur, and dead insects. Adults feed on pollen and nectar.
Behavior Patterns
The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis. Larvae are scavengers and move slowly while feeding. Adults are attracted to light and are often found near windows during the spring.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite or spread disease but are significant household pests because larvae damage textiles and stored goods. Some people may experience allergic reactions (dermatitis) to the larvae's 'hastisetae' (bristly hairs).
