Behavior Patterns
The larvae are relatively slow-moving and avoid light. They undergo several molts, leaving behind translucent 'shells' or skins. They are the destructive stage of the life cycle, whereas adults typically feed on pollen and nectar.
Risks & Benefits
They are significant household pests that can damage clothing and textiles. While they do not bite, the stiff hairs (hastisetae) on their bodies can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. They benefit the ecosystem outdoors by helping decompose animal matter.
