Natural Habitat

Behavior Patterns
Larvae prefer darkness and are often found deep in pile rugs or clothing storage; they molt several times, leaving behind cast skins. Adults are attracted to light and often found on windowsills.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: The bristly hairs (hastisetae) can cause an allergic skin reaction known as carpet beetle dermatitis; they cause significant damage to clothing, rugs, and upholstery. Benefits: None in a household setting, though they act as decomposers in nature.
