Size: 20 mm to 35 mm (approx. 1 to 1.5 inches)

Ten-lined June Beetle

Natural Habitat

Coniferous forests and sandy areas across Western North America.

Diet & Feeding

Adults feed on the needles of coniferous trees; larvae (grubs) live underground and feed on the roots of shrubs and trees.

Behavior Patterns

They are primarily nocturnal and are frequently attracted to porch lights. When disturbed, they produce a distinct hissing sound by pushing air through their spiracles.

Risks & Benefits

Harmless to humans as they do not bite or sting. In high numbers, the larvae can be minor agricultural pests to roots, but they generally serve as an important food source for birds and mammals.
