Natural Habitat

Coniferous forests and residential areas with pine, fir, or spruce trees; often seeks shelter indoors during winter.

Diet & Feeding

Herbivorous; feeds on the sap of developing cones and seeds of various coniferous trees using a piercing-sucking proboscis.

Behavior Patterns

Diurnal insects known for a slow flight pattern with a loud buzzing sound. They are famous for entering homes in large numbers during autumn to overwinter. Note: The yellow spots on this individual are tachinid fly eggs, which are parasites.
