Drain Fly Larvae
Psychodidae family
- Order & Family
- Order: Diptera; Family: Psychodidae
- Size
- Larvae are typically 4mm to 10mm (about 1/8 to 3/8 inch) in length.
Natural Habitat
Found in moist, organic-rich environments such as drains, sewer lines, septic tanks, and damp soil contaminated with sewage.
Diet & Feeding
They feed on the gelatinous film of bacteria, fungi, algae, and decomposing organic matter (biofilm) that accumulates in drains and pipes.
Behavior Patterns
The larvae live within the slime layer of pipes, breathing through a small tube that breaks the surface of the water; they undergo a complete metamorphosis into small, fuzzy, moth-like flies.
Risks & Benefits
While they do not bite or spread disease directly to humans, their presence indicates a sanitation issue or a leak; they can be a nuisance in large numbers but help break down organic sludge in drains.
