Natural Habitat
Indoors, commonly found in homes feeding on natural fibers such as wool, silk, fur, feathers, and dried animal products. They can also be found in cracks, crevices, under furniture, and in undisturbed areas.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on organic materials of animal origin, including wool, fur, feathers, silk, pet hair, dried meat, museum specimens, and insect collections.
Behavior Patterns
The larvae are often hairy or bristly and avoid light. They can roll into a ball when disturbed. Adults are winged and typically feed on pollen and nectar outdoors, or are attracted to light indoors. The larval stage is responsible for most damage.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Can cause significant damage to household items like carpets, clothing, upholstery, and stored foods. Some individuals may experience skin irritation or allergic reactions to the bristles of the larvae. Benefits: In nature, they play a role in decomposition, feeding on dead animal matter.
