Indoors in carpets, upholstered furniture, closets, and stored natural-fiber materials; adults commonly occur near windows and flowers.

Larvae consume keratin-rich materials such as wool, fur, feathers, hair, and dead insects. Adults feed mainly on pollen and nectar and do not damage fabrics.

Larvae are slow-moving, hairy, and often hide in dark, undisturbed areas; they may shed bristly skins as they develop. Development can take several months to over a year indoors.

Larvae can damage clothing, carpets, taxidermy, and other animal-based materials; their hairs may irritate skin or respiratory passages in sensitive people. They also help decompose animal remains outdoors.
