Brown House Moth (or similar Tineid Moth)

Natural Habitat

Often found indoors in homes, particularly in damp areas, attics, or closets, as well as outdoors in bird nests and waste matter.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae (caterpillars) feed on organic detritus, including wool, feathers, fur, dried food products, cereal, cork, and occasionally synthetic fibers contaminated with sweat or food.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are nocturnal and often run rather than fly when disturbed. They are attracted to light. The species can go into diapause (dormancy) under unfavorable environmental conditions.

Risks & Benefits

Considered a household pest because the larvae can damage clothing, carpets, upholstery (especially wool), and stored dry foods. They pose no direct health risk to humans (they do not bite or sting).
