Forest Tent Caterpillar
Scientific Name: Malacosoma disstria
Order & Family: Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae
Size: Larvae grow to approximately 2 inches (5 cm) in length.

Natural Habitat
Deciduous forests, woodlands, and urban areas across North America; often found on oaks, maples, and poplars.
Diet & Feeding
Herbivorous; larvae feed on the foliage of broadleaf trees and shrubs, occasionally causing significant defoliation during outbreaks.
Behavior Patterns
Unlike other tent caterpillars, they do not build silk tents; instead, they spin silken mats on branches where they congregate to rest or molt. They are known for cyclical population booms every 6 to 10 years.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Can cause major defoliation, which stresses trees and may kill weakened ones. Benefits: Provide a significant food source for birds, rodents, and other insects; their droppings (frass) cycle nutrients back into the forest soil.
