Natural Habitat
Found in gardens, orchards, and woodland edges throughout North America.
Diet & Feeding
Strictly predatory insectivore. It eats caterpillars, beetles, sawflies, and other pest insects using a piercing-sucking beak.
Behavior Patterns
Slow-moving and diurnal. Known for the characteristic cogs or 'wheel' on its prothorax. They undergo simple metamorphosis and are solitary hunters.
Risks & Benefits
Highly beneficial to gardens as they control pest populations. However, they can deliver an extremely painful bite if handled or provoked, though they are not medically significant to humans.
