Elm Leaf Beetle
Scientific Name: Xanthogaleruca lutesola
Order & Family: Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae
Size: 6 - 8 mm in length

Natural Habitat
Found on and around Elm trees; often enters homes in autumn to seek shelter for overwintering.
Diet & Feeding
Both larvae and adults feed exclusively on the leaves of various elm species (Ulmus spp.).
Behavior Patterns
Adults hibernate in protected dry areas like crevices or attics. They emerge in spring to lay yellow eggs on the underside of leaves. Larvae skeletonize leaves, leaving only veins.
Risks & Benefits
They are a nuisance pest in homes but do not bite or carry disease. In ecosystems, heavy infestations can defoliate and weaken elm trees, making them susceptible to other diseases like Dutch Elm Disease.
