Brown widow spider egg sac

Natural Habitat

Commonly found in sheltered outdoor locations such as under eaves, patio furniture, trash can handles, and within dense vegetation.

Diet & Feeding

While the egg sac contains developing spiders that do not eat yet, adult Brown Widows eat a variety of insects and other small arthropods.

Behavior Patterns

The egg sac is notable for its 'spikey' or 'tufted' appearance, resembling a sandbur. One sac can contain 120-150 eggs, and females can produce several sacs a season.

Risks & Benefits

While the spiders are generally shy and less aggressive than Black Widows, they are venomous. Their bite is painful but rarely life-threatening to healthy adults. They benefit the ecosystem by controlling insect populations.
