Natural Habitat
Indoors in dark, secluded areas (closets, attics, under furniture) where natural fibers are present; outdoors in bird nests or flowering plants.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on natural fibers (wool, silk, fur, feathers), dead insects, and pet hair. Adults feed on pollen and nectar.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae prefer dark, undisturbed places to feast on organic materials. Adults are attracted to light and often found near windowsills trying to go outside.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Larvae can cause significant damage to carpets, clothing, and upholstered furniture. The bristly hairs of the larvae can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions (carpet beetle dermatitis) in some people. Benefits: In nature, they help decompose dead animal matter.
